Here was my chance to find a way back to being Jesus' friend again and rid myself of the fear that kept me driving. So, I knelt before the '68 Impala, and begged God to remove my irrational fear of driving and make me his friend once more. Suddenly I felt a gentle warmth begin, from the crown of my head, to course throughout my body, and with it such a sense of release that I began to shake and contort and scream, "holy moses, I was born to drive!!!" I was set free, not from being picked up by mom after school(God hates losers who don't have their own cars), but from the fear and loathing that had burdened me and kept me from him who had never left me and who never felt anything for me but love and mercy and compassion.

Regardless of the origins of your fear, there are several possible routes you might take to overcome it. One might be to face your fear in a safe (and, if need be, supportive) setting, and gradually desensitize yourself to driving by first practicing in an area without much traffic and only a few small animals -- such as a quiet neighborhood or an empty parking lot in a gang-ridden area -- until you grow comfortable, and then moving on step by step to more challenging arenas. In this scenario, you'd leave as the last step whatever scares you the most ... driving backwards on an interstate during rush hour, for instance, or navigating downtown city traffic with your eyes closed. The key is to first become adjusted to driving in one situation before moving on to tackle the next. You can make the steps or the pace of tackling them as slow as you want to...of course, everyone will think you're a huge wuss if you do.

you know if you go down to the dmv and you are able to see and recognize a stop sign--they will just give you a permit--and once you have that you won't look like so much of a pussy.
